Working between St Ives and Leeds, Bell developed a language of abstract forms that grew out of his experience of Atlantic light, land and sea, but did not rely on straightforward depiction. ‘Stars and Stripes’ captures what Bell described as a search “to generate emotion by the interaction of visual forces”, using a monochrome palette to allow rhythm, pressure and movement to dominate and energise the composition.
