Picard was born in Derbyshire in 1922 and trained at Chesterfield School of Art and then the Slade during the war. She arrived in West Cornwall after the war on a French fishing boat and lived in Lamorna valley, followed by Mousehole where she ran a pottery studio with her husband.
Picard taught painting and ceramics at Penzance School of Art and was a longstanding member of the Newlyn Society of Artists. Her colourful, semi-abstract works of West Cornwall are exhibited in galleries across the country and the Penlee Museum held a large retrospective in 2025.
Picard’s ‘Grey Harbour’ uses a soft, restrained palette and simplified forms to turn an ordinary working harbour into a quietly atmospheric scene. Rather than focusing on accurate details, Picard lets the harbour dissolve into blocks of light and shade, inviting the viewer to feel the mood of the place rather than reading its exact geography.
